On Thursday, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, advocated for a new election in Israel during a speech on the Senate floor.
Schumer, who, according to The Guardian, is the highest-ranking Jewish official in the United States, specifically criticized Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"However, I also believe Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by allowing his political survival to take precedence over the best interests of Israel," Schumer stated, as reported by The New York Times, calling the Prime Minister a "major obstacle to peace".
"He has been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in Gaza, which is pushing support for Israel worldwide to historic lows. Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah."
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, quickly responded, labeling Schumer's statements as "grotesque" and "hypocritical," according to Politico.
