“The first ship in the context of the Cyprus Maritime Corridor Initiative for humanitarian aid to Gaza has sailed,” writes the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in a post on X.
The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, calls the departure a “sign of hope” in response to Christodoulides.
The ship carries almost 200 tons of food, according to Reuters, and is the first in a pilot project to open a new sea route for aid to Gaza. The intended goal of the project is to be able to ship food and medical supplies to a temporary port the US plans to establish.
The mission is organized by collaborative efforts between the EU, the UK, the US, and the United Arab Emirates, writes Bloomberg.
