On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, OpenAI announced a “historic”, multi-year partnership with American publishing and mass media company News Corp, which was founded by media magnate Rupert Murdoch.
“We believe an historic agreement will set new standards for veracity, for virtue and for value in the digital age,” said CEO of News Corp Robert in a statement.
“We are delighted to have found principled partners in Sam Altman and his trusty, talented team who understand the commercial and social significance of journalists and journalism. This landmark accord is not an end, but the beginning of a beautiful friendship in which we are jointly committed to creating and delivering insight and integrity instantaneously.”
During the partnership, OpenAI will have the opportunity to display the content of some of News Corp’s imprints in response to user questions, with the goal of providing users with “reliable information and news sources”.
OpenAI says that News Corp will further share their “journalistic expertise” to help “ensure the highest journalism standards are present across OpenAI’s offering.”

Through the agreement, OpenAI will receive access to current and archived content from publications such as the New York Post and The Sun, as well as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, and more.
OpenAI is announcing the collaboration in the wake of several US newspapers suing the service for unlawfully copying and training its large language model (LLM), ChatGPT, on their articles.
The New York Times led the charge against OpenAI and its major investor Microsoft when the media organization filed a lawsuit against the tech companies in December of 2023.
