On Wednesday the British Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), a politically progressive think tank, released a new report on the possible effects of generative artificial intelligence on the UK job market.
According to the think tank’s analysis around 11% of tasks currently done by UK workers are exposed to existing generative AI. The amount of affected tasks could rise to 59% if companies “integrate AI more deeply”.
The report models three possible scenarios: A best and a worst case, and a middle one.
In IPPR’s worst case scenario all jobs at risk are being replaced by AI, leading to 7.9 million job losses and no GDP gains.
In the best case scenario, all jobs at risk are instead augmented by AI, leading to no losses and a 13% economic boost to the UK GDP.
In the so-called “central scenario” 4.4 million jobs are replaced by AI, but with 6.3% economic gains to the GDP.
